Briggs & Stratton makes small engines for use in riding mowers, push mowers, snow throwers and other powered yard equipment. On all Briggs & Stratton engines manufactured since 1965, you'll find a set of three codes stamped in the metal. The first set of numbers is the model number, indicating the cubic inch displacement, design series, crankshaft orientation, PTO bearing and starter type. The second number set indicates the engine type. The third set of numbers tells the date and place of manufacture. These numbers may be in several places depending on the engine type.
1
Make sure the engine is off and cool. Wipe any excess dirt or grass from the engine area with a cloth, or rinse it off with a hose so you can more easily locate numbers stamped on the engine.
2
Check the blower housing, muffler shield or the area above the spark plug on a lawn mower engine. On horizontal shaft overhead valve engines, the number will likely be on the rocker cover.
3
Check any other visible metal parts on the top, back, front and sides of the engine if you did not find the model number in any of the designated spots. If you still do not find the number, it may be under the shroud or under a decorative chrome rocker cover. Remove the shroud or rocker cover, and check the metal beneath.
Tip
- The numbers on the engine emissions label, giving the family and air index, are not the model number.

Briggs & Stratton manufactures small engines for outdoor power equipment, lawn mowers and generators. If the engine has a problem and you need to buy replacement parts or get repair advice, you need to know the model and serial number of the engine. These numbers are stamped on the engine, but the location may vary. For push mower engines, the numbers are usually on the engine shroud -- the cover over the top of the engine. Look along the bottom of the shroud on each side to find the number.
Other Places
If you do not find the numbers on the engine shroud, or you are looking for the number on an engine on a different type of equipment, you have a few spots to check. On a utility engine, the numbers are usually stamped on the valve cover below the exhaust at the top of the engine. https://yellowinstitute555.weebly.com/bluetooth-usb-host-controller-driver-windows-bootcamp.html. On power built engines, look on the valve cover, a small metal box, beneath the engine shroud. Look under the plastic cover near the muffler or spark plugs. The numbers are usually stamped into a metal part, or attached with a metal plate.
